When is the best time to begin orthodontics?

Legendary Smiles treats patients of all ages, and a patient can seek treatment at any age if so desired. However, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the ideal age for initial treatment is at age seven or at the first sign of orthodontic problems. Initiating treatment at a young age ensures that your child receives efficient and effective care while simultaneously limiting the amount of time and cost of treatment.

Orthodontic treatment may or may not be necessary at such an early age, but an initial examination helps the doctor determine a child’s optimal time for treatment. The first adult molars erupt and form a back bite around age seven in most patients. This gives the doctor the opportunity to evaluate tooth relationships from every angle in your child’s mouth.

For example, the emergence of erupting incisors may signal the development of an overbite, an open bite, teeth crowding, or a gummy smile. By taking your child for a screening, you are increasing the probability of a beautiful smile and lower treatment expenses!

What are the potential benefits of early orthodontic evaluation?

  • Timely detection of problems before they can become serious, like missing or impacted teeth
  • Greater opportunity for more effective treatment
  • Guides teeth growth and development
  • Careful monitoring
  • Opportunity to lower the cost of treatment

Is your child a candidate for early orthodontic care?

Orthodontics will not only improve the aesthetics of your child’s smile, but orthodontic treatment will also prevent and fix bite problems. Incorrect bites often result from tooth or jaw misalignment, which affects the way children smile, chew, clean their teeth, or feel about their smiles.
